In the late 1970’s a group of believers were meeting at the Lion’s Club in Red Oak, Texas. They were under the leadership of Brother Dan Bray. Desiring to have a church in Red Oak, this group of families sought the assistance of Pastor Ron Jenkins of Grace Baptist Temple in Duncanville, Texas.
Pastor Ron Jenkins led Grace Baptist Temple to commission Dr. Keith Shumate to organize an Independent Baptist Church in Red Oak, Texas. On Easter, April 6, 1980, Brother Shumate began his tenure as Pastor of Baptist Temple of Red Oak (the name was later changed to Landmark Baptist Church). The Church was formally organized on May 2, 1980.
For twenty-five years, Dr. Keith Shumate pastored the Church and faithfully led the Church. In 1994, Landmark merged with Calvary Baptist Church, which had declined to just few people. Landmark sold their first building and property on Red Oak Road and relocated to the property of the former Calvary Baptist Church at 982 E. Ovilla Road.
On April 3, 2005, Landmark celebrated her 25th Anniversary. It was also on this date that Dr. Keith Shumate submitted his resignation and retired from the pastoral ministry. With that resignation, Chad Spence became the Senior Pastor. Pastor Spence continued in the pastorate until January 31, 2016.
After serving as Pastor Spence’s associate for 7 years, Pastor Wells was immediately installed as the Interim-Pastor and called to the Pastorate on April 3, 2016.
